"Jeans Purse" Sewing Project

Many of you have written about the jeans purse that you saw on ‘HSN Today’ last month. This is the perfect time to repurpose all those jeans from last season. Jeans make a quick and practical purse because all the topstitching and outside pockets have already been done! The multiple pockets give you quick and easy access to keys, cell phone or hand cream. Grab a pair of your old grubs and let’s get started!

Supplies:
  • Pair of jeans
  • ½ yard lining (this can be whatever you prefer from satin to cotton)
  • 4” of 1 ½ - 2” hook and loop fastener
  • 30 Wt. Thread (Preferred but not mandatory. Match the topstitching thread that already exists on your jean)
Instructions:
  1. Lay the pants on your cutting table face up. Using a ruler, mark a cutting line across the hips just above the crotch seam. Cut across the cutting line.

  2. Lay the cut piece on your folded lining piece and mark ½” around the outer edge. Cut lining. If your jeans scoop down in the front, place right sides of lining together and copy the scoop onto the front piece of lining.

  3. Mark a 3” x __" strip down the length of one pant leg. Cut. This piece will be your strap.

  4. Press ½” seam allowance towards inside down both sides of strip. Now fold in half and press.

  5. Stitch along outside edges, then make a second stitch next to the first stitchline using your presser foot as a guide. Pin the ends to the top sides of the bag.

  6. Stitch the lining with right sides together leaving the top completely open and a 3” opening in the center bottom.  Press seam open.

  7. Fold bottom corners flat matching seamlines and pin in place. Sew across seamline and trim excess seam allowance.

  8. Pin lining around jean waistband. Stitch around top. Double stitch at strapping for extra reinforcement. Turn right side out and reach through the 3” opening in lining and pull through the bottom of the denim bag.

  9. Sew straight across denim bottom. Repeat step 7 at corners. Pull right side out.

  10. Fold lining seam allowances in toward each other and topstitch opening closed.

  11. Position, pin and sew your hook and loop fastener to the top edge of front and back of bag. Make sure you change the topthread to match the hook and loop fastener. You may have to hand sew the front edge bottom of fastener to the lining because of the bulky outside snap.

  12. You did it! Now lace a scarf, ribbon or belt through the belt loops and… repurposed fashion plus!!!
