"Confetti Clutch" Sewing Project
Nothing says ‘unique’ quite like a surface embellishment such as felting, painting, embroidery, appliqué, couching or confetti. You can change the surface of almost any fabric and turn an otherwise boring accessory into raz-ma-taz! The confetti clutch pictured below can be made from a custom rectangle or a pre-made placemat. Add an oversized pearl necklace from your costume jewelry stash for a handle over the top or on an end. Either way, you’ll be sporting a look unlike any other.

Supplies:

  • 14” fabric for outside (velveteen pictured)

  • 14” fabric for lining (I used contrasting orange dupioni)

  • Scraps of ribbon, Angelina Fibers, Yarns, Metallic threads, Floss, Trims, etc…

  • Rotary cutter and mat

  • 14” Fusible interfacing

  • 14” piece of Wonder Under or Thermo Web

Instructions:

  1. Cut fibers and ribbons on mat using rotary cutter

  2. Cut a 14” x 18” rectangle out of outer fabric,  lining fabric and interfacing.

  3. Press interfacing to wrong side of purse front fabric.

  4. Draw a line across one end 6” from edge.

  5. Mark center of narrow end and draw a line from the center point to side at the 6” marking forming a triangle.

  6. Cut triangle out of Wonder Under or Thermo Web and press sticky side down onto right side of clutch fabric as shown. Cool. Peel away paper.

  7. Sprinkle Confetti onto adhesive triangle and using a Teflon pressing sheet, press in place.

  8. Drop the feed on your machine and attach the free motion embroidery foot. Using a matching thread, stipple over the top of the confetti until all pieces seem securely in place.

  9. Add trim along rough edges if desired.

  10. Place lining over top and pin in place.

  11. Stitch around outside edges leaving a 3” opening to turn right side out.

  12. Clip corners. Turn right side out. Press

  13. Fold bottom third upward and pin in place.

  14. Stitch a small zig-zag across side seams.

  15. Flap the top third down and add a button or snap for closure.  You may want to sew on a handle.
*TIP: If you would like an inside pocket, add the pocket before constructing the triangle. constructing the rectangle.
