"Baby Squares" Embroidery Project

I first saw these adorable little blankees while visiting my girlfriend MaryAnn a few weeks ago. Her youngest grand- daughter carries one with her wherever she goes--- but being a hand me down, it has the name of her older sister embroidered on it. I thought it would be nice for Lucy to have her own blankee so I set out to work on it right away.
 
This was so much fun and a cinch to make even if you are a beginner. All you need is a straight stitch, a handful of straight pins, ribbon trimmings, thread and scissors and you are well on your way. I’ve included instructions this month because these little treasures are the perfect new baby gift.

Supplies:

• 1/3 yd. Fleece
• 7 different coordinating ribbons

Instructions:

1. Cut the selvage edges from the fleece. (manufacturers printed border)
   
   
2. Cut the fleece into two 12” square
   
   
3. Make four 4” ribbon pieces out of each of the seven ribbons. (making 28 ribbon pieces)
   
   
4. Fold the ribbon pieces in half and pin the raw edges along the edge of the right side of the fleece square front.
   
   
5. Place the remaining fleece piece over the pinned piece with right sides together. Pin in place.
   
   
6. Using a short straight stitch sew around all 4 sides (being sure to leave a 3” opening for turning)
   
   
7. Clip corners and turn to right side.
   
   
8. Press seams and topstitch ½” from edge.
   
   
9. Appliqué or embroider child’s name on center front.
