"Easy Fleecy Foot Pocket Blankey" Sewing Project

My husband George actually came up with this idea. Every time we sat down for a movie, I would cover my feet and legs with a throw and ask, “Please tuck my feet.” One day he said, “You know if you just sewed a seam here at the bottom, your feet would be a lot warmer!”

Equipped with a new inspiration, the next day I came up with my easy fleecy foot pocket blankey. These blankets are great for long car rides, football games and sleepovers. Since fleece is available in hundreds of colors and designs, you can make a custom comfy for every person on your list. Notice Chelsea’s feet - warm as toast!

Supplies:

• Fleece yardage: the same length as the recipient’s height.
• Satin Blanket binding: 2- 4 1/2 yd packages should be more than enough.

Instructions:

1. Cut off and remove the selvage edge from both sides of the fleece piece.
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
2. Fold in half lengthwise with right sides together.
   Pin bottom along edge and serge or sew together using an overcasting stitch.
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
3. Sandwich the fleece between satin binding all the way around blanket and pin in place.
   
   TIP: there is a short side to the folded and pressed satin binding. The shorter side is to be used on the top so that the bottom layer will be included in all the topstitching and not slip out from under the sewn area.
   
   
4. To minimize skipped areas and add a creative flair, use a decorative stitch to attach the satin binding layers together.
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
5. Optional:  For the optimal personalization treatment, embroider your loved one’s name on the top of the blankey. I hooped the blanket with a layer of iron-on tear away stabilizer on both the top and bottom. At first I tried this with only the bottom side stabilized and had many skipped stitches. I tried changing from a regular needle to a ballpoint with no success. When I added the top layer of stabilizer, it stitched out beautifully.
